Rolls Batteries Surrette Batteries (same company - 2 names)
Industrial quality available in a wide range of
configurations. 5000 series is excellent for larger systems because
multiple strings can be eliminated. Generally the fewer strings
the better, so larger systems should use cells with more amp-hours.
All Rolls/Surrette are eligible for free
shipping on large quantities direct from Surrette in Nova Scotia.
Batteries also may be picked up in Colorado. Occasionally there are
lead times on Surrette. Clicking on the model numbers will take you to current catalog page at the Solar Panel Store.

Battery life is dependent on their care and feeding.
Any warranty claims will require documentation of usage and maintenance.
If maintained properly (charged to full regularly and properly,
water level maintained) the warranty shouldn't be an issue. Note that batteries should not be allowed to sit in
a discharged state for any length of time. We have seen brand new batteries totally ruined by sitting unused for one year.
Modern
charge controllers do a great job and a good charge controller is
an investment in the life of the batteries as well.
State of Charge is best measured using a specific gravity-based battery tester. These have a glass pipette
with a calibrated float to measure the density of the electrolyte. Voltage can be used as a rough indication of the charge state but only if the batteries are not being charged or loaded at the time. An amp-hour gauge is a good way to keep track of the current going into
and out of the batteries and can display state of charge information quite accurately. The well known brand of amp-hour gauge is
the TriMetric. The leading charge controller manufacturers are soon going to add this functionality to solar charge controllers
which will be a nice advancement for off-the-grid battery / solar systems.
