Grid-Tie System
If you wish to use the electricity generated by your solar panels along with electricity you buy from a utitily and sell the surplus, then you must have a grid-tie inverter. A grid-tie inverter will convert the DC electricity produced by your solar panels into AC electricity that can be used with the AC electricity that is sold to you through the utility grid. When you tie your system to the utility grid, you are able to “net meter” the electricity your solar array generates or sell the surplus electricity back to the utility company. Imagine receiving a check from your utility company instead of a bill! PV Powered, a small engineering firm located in Oregon, manufactures a series of grid-tie inverters called the StarInverter. The primary difference between each inverter in the StarInverter series is the capacity, or the amount of DC electricity from the solar panels it is designed to handle. For example, the StarInverter 2800 is designed to handle up to 2800 watts of DC electricity - remember that the electrical power generated by your solar panels is the voltage (measured in volts) at which the panels are wired multiplied by the current that the panels generate (measured in amps) or Electrical Power (watts) = Voltage (volts) x Current (amps). The PVP2800 has an operating range when configured as a 208VAC inverter of 180 volts to 390 volts. When configured as a 240VAC inverter, the operating range is from 200 volts to 390 volts.
