Sunny
Boy 2500
Grid-Tie systems are designed around the specs of
the chosen inverter. If there are no batteries in the system, the
DC voltage can be higher for greater efficiency when converting
to 120V AC.
The Sunny Boy 2500UL,
made by the German company SMA, is UL-listed and INCLUDES a PV junction
box and a GFI, which is a code requirement for rooftop installation.
Because of the strings of solar panels required to provide a high
DC voltage, this is referred to as a "string-tie" inverter.
The inverters themselves may also be strung together for greater
capacity.

The 2500UL features Maximum Power Point Tracking
to optimize panel output. Very straightforward to install: 1/2"
knockout for 1-3 strings in, 1/2" knockout for L1,L2,N 230V
out to load center. Complete 60 page pdf Owner's and Install manual
here (1252k)
The input range for the Sunny Boy 2500UL is between
234 and 550VDC, max. current is 13 Amps, max. DC power is 2710 Watts.
The inverter handles overload without shutting down, so the system
does not need to be designed with a cushion limiting the size of
the array. The maximum recommended array is 3000W, with a cooling
fan available if necessary for operating the inverter with a large
array and poor ambient air circulation.

This system is designed to use most of the capacity
of the inverter. However, the inverter operates at high efficiency
at 50% capacity and above so as few as 10 24Volt panels can be used
if desired.
With an average of 5 hours full sun, and an 75%
overall system efficiency, the system will yield approximately 10.5
kWHr per day, or 315 kWHr per month. This would be peak seasonal
output in a peak location (Colorado, California, etc). Output is
significantly reduced by shading or poor orientation, not to mention
cloudy weather. Extremely cloudy places may only yield 2 average
hours of full-sun-equivalent in the winter.
